A study character from BlenderVerse: a mythical "fish girl" with piercings
Fish Girl
About the Project
This is my work from the BlenderVerse 2.1 character course. I wrote about the course here. On this model I practiced different techniques: I looked at what would be faster to work with and what would look better.
I wanted a mythical fish-themed character: a teenage fish-girl who likes piercings and is trying to assert herself. I wanted the main focus to be on the arms and hands.
The model was done in Blender from scratch. I did the textures in Substance Painter. I went through the full pipeline: sculpting, retopology, UVs, materials (skin with scales, hair), a basic rig. I made the clothing both through modeling and through simulation.
The hair took a lot of tedious work. I looked at how to make it more mobile, and at the same time I was setting up ComfyUI for 3D: I used ComfyUI to write scripts that cut down the time spent setting up the hair bones.
I practiced on the clothes too. I made several outfits for the model. On the renders I left a simple outfit, visible in one of the frames. Later I want to add what I had planned at the start: a flowing top and a white flowing skirt.
I worked separately on the proportions of the arms and legs. At first I made them larger than a regular person's: in the concept she swims with them, so physically she needed large arms and legs. On the final camera angles it did not look good, so I scaled the arms down on the renders. Next I want longer fingers, like a pianist's.
Software
Main software: Blender (the whole piece from scratch) Textures: Substance Painter AI in the pipeline: ComfyUI (hair scripts, 3D work)
Pipeline
The model was built from scratch. Full character pipeline:
- sculpting
- retopology
- UV
- materials: skin with scales, hair
- basic rig
- clothing: modeling and simulation (I tried both approaches on different variants)
Plans
- go back to the character and add the clothing from the original idea: a flowing top and a white flowing skirt
- refine the arm proportions and the fingers
- if needed, confirm the render engine in the file and record it in the description
